The Big Idea

The call to Christ is the call to serve.

In the Word and Discussion

Here's an interesting statement: "If a person seeks not to receive love, but rather to give it, he or she will become lovable and will most certainly be loved in the end." That statement is a paradox! We all want to be loved; however, instead of seeking to be loved, we need to go out and love, care and serve others. In doing this we become lovable, and we experience the joy of being loved by others. There are four principles to remember in seeking to become others-centered: (1) actions speak louder than words, (2) treat others as royalty, (3) lose yourself in service to others, and (4) realize that you are the only Jesus somebody knows. Keeping this in mind, get into the Word and discuss the following questions together:

Actions Speak Louder than Words

1. Read 1 John 3:18 together. What actions could you do to become a more others-centered person? Be specific.

2. Is it easier or harder to be others-centered in your family than with friends? Why?

Treat Others as Royalty

1. Read Romans 12:10. What specifically can you do to treat others as royalty?

2. Name three people God is putting on your heart to treat in a special way. What do you plan to do to treat them as royalty?

Lose Yourself in the Service of Others

1. Read Luke 9:24. What did Jesus mean by this statement?

2. What is the hardest thing about being others-centered?

3. What is the best thing about being others-centered?

You Are the Only Jesus Somebody Knows

1. What does it mean that you are the only Jesus somebody knows?

2. When you ask Jesus to come into your life, He takes up residence. You become a representative of Jesus to others. How does that make you feel?

3. How are you representing Jesus to your world?

4. What could you as a family do to better represent Jesus to the world?

Reflect and Apply

1. Jesus was called the "Suffering Servant" in the book of Isaiah. Why do you think He was called that?

2. Should we go on serving and caring for someone when there is little or no response from them? Why or why not?

3. As a family, what are 10 specific things you are doing to serve others? What are 10 more ideas you could come up with for serving together?
